I haven't eaten meat myself since 1981. After reading "Eating Animals," I am beginning to look for alternatives to dairy, eggs and fish as well.
However, I am a cat owner. Cats are obligate carnivores. The author talks about his dog, "George" in the book, but he avoids the subject of what he feeds her. Pet food manufacturers have been putting more and more ingredients in pet food that are not in the animals natural diet--such as wheat and corn glutens. This has been going on for a long time, to the extent that we are seeing more diabetes in cats and allergies in dogs. It became more widely known when the manufacturers started buying glutens from China, where they were laced with toxic chemicals to falsely increase their protein readings.
Now pet nutritionists are advocating a higher protein, more whole meat (even raw) diet for our pets. How do we feed them without contributing to factory farming?

And more discussion on thet here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=181(though it seems many people have their pets go vegan, which I do not promote. As you say, cats are obligate carnivores, and dogs are opportunistic carnivores....both involve a need to eat meat.)
